Amanda Seyfried is Elizabeth Holmes in first trailer for The Dropout

The black turtleneck, the red lipstick, the baritone voice – Amanda Seyfried has Elizabeth Holmes’ number in the first trailer for The Dropout, released Monday.

Seyfried, 36, stars in the Hulu limited series alongside William H. Macy, Laurie Metcalf, Elizabeth Marvel, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Kate Burton, Stephen Fry, Michel Gill, Michael Ironside, Bill Irwin and Josh Pais, as the disgraced founder and CEO of Theranos.

The Dropout follows the ripped-from-the-headlines true crime tale of Elizabeth Holmes, who was once billed as Silicon Valley’s next Steve Jobs, her rise to self-made billionaire status and her dramatic fall from grace for defrauding investors.

‘The world works in certain ways until a new great idea comes along and changes everything,’ Seyfried says in Holmes’ much-discussed affected voice.

The trailer introduces audiences to Elizabeth Holmes and the birth of the idea for a single-drop at-home blood testing device that would go on to be the basis of her medical tech company, Theranos.

Blonde and brilliant Elizabeth appears as a wide-eyed Stanford undergrad who eschews higher education to try her luck in Silicon Valley at the age of 19.

Her transformation from college dropout to billionaire entrepreneur is viewed in warp speed through out the clip.

‘This machine is going to change the world,’ a confident sounding Holmes says at one point in the clip.

Holmes sought to develop a proprietary blood testing device that would revolutionize healthcare by being able to perform a wide variety of tests with a single drop of blood.

She raised hundreds of millions of dollars from investors for the company, Theranos, without ever actually delivering a working prototype of the testing unit.

Questions about the efficacy of the device and Holmes’ knowledge and expertise are raised (and quickly quashed) in the video.

‘I don’t understand how you’re doing this extremely complex chemical engineering with a high school degree,’ one detractor questions.

Seyfried’s on screen metamorphosis serves to illustrate the rise to power for the real life Elizabeth.

Viewers see Holmes trading in flowy blonde waves for a French twist, casual attire for a uniform of a black turtleneck and, of course, a red lip.

The fraudster’s bizarre voice, which has been the subject of much discussion, is featured prominently in the trailer when Seyfried is actually practicing lowering her tone speaking into a mirror.

‘This is an inspiring step forward,’ Elizabeth, looking frazzled, repeats in the mirror making her voice deeper each time.

Seyfried stars opposite Naveen Andrews, who plays her ex-boyfriend and former business partner Sunny Balwani, who appears to egg her forward despite not having the technology to back her claims.

The former Theranos CEO is facing up to 20 years in jail – with each count of her sentence likely to be served concurrently. She is expected to appeal.

Theranos raised just shy of a billion dollars from venture capitalist titans including Tim Draper, Donald Lucas and Dixon Doll; wealthy heirs to the founders of Amway, Walmart and Cox Communications; and heavyweights of tech and media such as Larry Ellison and Rupert Murdoch.

If sent to jail, Holmes would be the most notable female executive to serve time since Martha Stewart did in 2004 after lying to investigators about a stock sale. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

After seven days deliberating, the jury returned with four guilty verdicts and four acquittals. Holmes was facing nine counts of wire fraud and 12 counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Her trial was postponed several times, because of the COVID-19 pandemic and Holmes’s pregnancy.

She gave birth to a boy in July in Redwood City, California – her first child, with San Diego hotel heir Billy Evans, who often accompanied her to trial alongside her mother, Noel Holmes.

The Dropout will premiere on Hulu on March 3.
